Warner Bros. has announced that its long-awaited superhero sequel, Wonder Woman 1984 starring Gal Gadot, directed by Patty Jenkins, will debut on HBO Max as well as theatres on December 25 in the US. The movie will be released in theatres internationally earlier, on December 16.

The film will be available for a month on HBO Max in the U.S. included at no additional cost to subscribers. After the first free month, Wonder Woman 1984 will play in theatres for an additional few weeks before being made available for rental on-demand.

Actor Gal Gadot shared the news on Twitter.

The sequel would have premiered in June this year but has been postponed three times due to the current coronavirus outbreak. The decision to abandon the traditional theatrical premiere is surprising – Wonder Woman 1984 was expected to be a box-office hit with over $ 1 billion. The first “Wonder Woman” was dependent on box office sales and it grossed over 820 million dollars worldwide.

By releasing “Wonder Woman 1984” in cinemas as well as on a streaming platform, Time Warner – which owns both Warner and HBO said – “We hope to be able to compensate for the losses from ticket sales with new customers on the streaming service.”

As we navigate through these unparalleled times, we in the industry must be inventive to move forward,” said Ann Sarnoff, CEO of Warner Media Studios, in a statement.

Along with the announcement of the new release date, Warner Bros. has also shared a new trailer of the movie. Watch below!
